Biography

From Microbes to Genomes

Dr. Krishna Mohan Medicherla is a distinguished scientist and academic, currently serving as Professor of Biotechnology in the School of Life and Basic Sciences at Jaipur National University, Jaipur.

Across a career spanning more than four decades, he has held significant leadership positions in Indian science. He previously served as Head of R&D (Biotechnology & Bioinformatics) at the Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR), Jaipur, and as a Professor at the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra — Jaipur Campus. His early career included a tenure as a Fellow in Microbial Biotechnology at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi.

He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology (1987) from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology. His research portfolio is unusually broad, encompassing microbial biotechnology, environmental sustainability and medical genomics — a range that has allowed him to work equally on industrial fermentation problems and on the computational side of the life sciences.

He has successfully managed numerous research projects funded by national agencies including the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Department of Science & Technology (DST), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). He has authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications, and has facilitated technology transfers — among them the production of Xanthan Gum — carrying laboratory work through to industrial application.
